The Villiersdorp Dutch Reformed Church invited a team from YWAM and Toevlug Rehabilitation Centre to present a Drug & Alcohol Awareness Campaign during the week of July 17 – 22, targeting the school children and farm workers in the area.
Although building relationships with the kids in school was difficult because the limited amount of time we had with them, we really got to know the people (students and teachers) in the hostel and we were able to pray into their specific needs as they asked us.
In the mornings, the teams went to the drug awareness exhibitions and spent time in the schools, talking to teachers and some kids as well as spending time praying for them. During the afternoon, we went to farms to talk to workers after the program offered by the Toevlug staff.
In the evenings, we were given an opportunity to spend time with the girls and guys from the school hostel where we were staying. We spent it hanging out, getting to know them, doing dramas, dances and showing videos, as well as teaching them a spiritual side to the information they had received from Toevlug during the day. The testimonies shared really impacted them and they got so see people who had lived though the situations they had learned about that morning. The last evening was opened up for them to ask us questions and share stories with them. They allowed us to pray for them individually and we saw some real break-throughs in their lives.
